3D Fantasy Dragon head – Step-by-Step guide

Hello again, are you hungry for fantasy and magic? It's time to guide you to do a more personal and mystical decoration that brings a touch of mythology and medieval atmosphere to your home. Keep reading, because I will guide you step by step on how to do your own 3D artwork to your wall. I made this dragon head myself, but you can apply the idea and make any creature you want! For example, you can make the face of a troll, a fairy, an orc or a wizard! The only limit is your imagination, so let your ideas wander freely into the enchanted world of fantasy.

You can also make a dragon head too with your own look or any other magical being you want!

STEP 1.

IDEA OF THE FANTASY BEING
  • Think about what kind of character you want to make. Does your character have big ears, big teeth or maybe a big nose? Is it a fairy tale character or a dragon inspired by my pictures? What does it look like, what shape is it's head, for example, does it have horns or other personal characteristics? What color is it?

STEP 2.

TOOLS & MATERIALS

In my artwork, I used tools that I found at home, which are in the picture below. I also used wood glue and finishing spray varnish, which is not shown in the picture.

YOU NEED:

  1. Thin and hard canvas

  2. Some kind of frames (I bought mine at a flea market)

  3. Hammer and tiny nails

  4. Acrylic paintings and one shimmer paint

  5. Different brushes

  6. Hot glue

  7. 2 x foil rolls

  8. 2 x Modeling clay (2 kg, air drying, light weight)

  9. Clear finishing spray varnish (optional)

  10. Craft glue (optional, I used wood glue)

STEP 3.

LET'S START
  1. Fasten the thin canvas to the frames with nails. (I only had these nails which were too long, so I turned them as shown below)

STEP 4.

CREATE THE HEAD
  1. Form a big and hard base from the foil, which follows the shape of the character's head.

  2. Attach the foil head to the canvas using hot glue. Make sure there is enough hot glue to stick to the canvas. (You can add wood glue to the holes between the foil head and the canvas for an extra strong attachment)

  3. Shape thin pieces of modeling clay and stick them on top of the foil head. Start design shapes suitable for the character and slowly bring the creature to life.

STEP 5.

FINAL TOUCHES & DETAIL
  1. When you're happy with the shape of the character's head, you can start making details, like teeth and skin texture.

  2. Remember, the more texture the skin has, the more alive it looks!

  3. Let it dry until the modeling clay will be completely dry. (IMPORTANT)

  4. You can add wood glue between the canvas and the edge of the characters head. (optional but recommended)

STEP 6.

PAINTING
  1. Paint the base layer with the dark paint. (black or other color)

  2. Next, paint with the color you want your character to be.

  3. Add shimmer paint to the parts of the skin texture you want to bring to life.

  4. When the creature is ready, you can finish it with the clear varnish spray. (optional but recommended)
